Feeding Recommendations for Distillers Dried Grains
Historically, distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) have not been used in swine diets according to Jerry Shurson, Swine Specialist with the University of Minnesota. The reason being the variability in quality, nutrient content, and poor amino acid digestibility and cost when compared to corn, soybean meal and dicalcium phosphate. Shurson’s research at the University of Minnesota has indicated newer ethanol plants do a better job of producing DDGS. He found that they are higher in digestible and metabolizable energy, higher in total digestible amino acids, and higher in available phosphorus compared to other plants and what is listed in NRC (1998). The use of low quality, dark colored DDGS is not recommended for swine diets. MORE
